Turkey rejects us request to protect us kurdish allies in syria. #syria ââ?¬â?? BILTA (@biltepe) 20 July 2017
'We're all in this together.' In their first exchange, the Turkish president said he supported their request to send fighter jets into Syria, and then they turned the tables, accusing the West of interfering in the region.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg this weekend to discuss efforts to stop the Syrian government from using chemical weapons against civilians.
The US and Russia are trying to establish their own position in the conflict, after months of efforts to coordinate a military response. The coalition has said US jets would not be attacking Russian-backed forces while the Russian forces would be attacking the Syrian army.
In a sign that tensions will escalate, on Monday the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, said a Russian strike on Syrian forces at a military base in Syria would not violate the ceasefire.
In the meantime, Russian military jets pounded two villages east of the border from the Turkish border on Sunday, a local official said.
"Russia's military planes bombed at least four villages that were linked to Islamic State group (IS) and one villages close to Latakia from the southern border on the Syrian-Turkish border," he told journalists, speaking on condition of anonymity.
On Tuesday, Russia's ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin urged the Syrian government to step up its "strategic initiative" to deescalate the conflict, in response to President Bashar al-Assad's comments last week accusing "terrorists" of using chemical weapons.
"With this initiative, President Putin has promised to support the Syrian government," he said, adding that Syria would not tolerate "the use of chemical weapons against civilians".

Telling story of change in newcastles west end through art
Elliott says she is not alone in her support of changing the name
Caitlin O'Brien, co-author of the story, told CBC's Daybreak host Carol Off that the name change is "the solution."
O'Brien and her husband, Keith O'Brien, have grown accustomed to living outside the downtown Toronto area and believe it is a big step forward.
"I think it's very important in our community because the name was an unfortunate term and we really wanted to move on," she said.
"It was something that had a negative impact on our community."
There have been hundreds of complaints to the city's planning and development committee, according to city spokesperson Sarah Brown.
Cultural Heritage committee member and chair of the urban design, heritage and recreation committee, Doug Llewellyn, believes the name has changed for the better.
"I hope it doesn't just change. I hope the city council will look at this and be thinking about, 'Well, should we change it from the downtown's downtown to where it's now or should we go for a little bit lighter for everybody?'"
He says change is inevitable, as is a call for greater community engagement with the name change.
The proposal also calls for moving one of the five parks on the site east from its current location, which is called the Main Courthouse, to the current location.

Rio tinto employee denies being 'pushed' on mine submissions for Rio's bid - Daily Mail
Welcoming the decision, an Olympic official said: "This decision is yet another milestone in the bid process as it has now been given the green light to the IOC and the Australian Government."
The move comes after the IOC formally opened its bid process in Brazil two months ago but Brazil's bid was initially withdrawn after the country said it had been unfairly subjected to a "campaign of hate", The New Paper reported.
The IOC has previously had to reject the Rio Games proposal for a series of projects, including three golf courses in the country's southern city of Recife, after a "campaign of hate", but the latest round of rejections has been seen as a major step in revamping Rio's bid.
Ahead of the announcement, Rio state President Sergio Caballero was quoted as saying in the New Paper that "it is clear that Brazil is one step ahead in the bid process."
However, he said that the bid, including the golf courses, had not yet been presented to the IOC and the state had yet to get to grips with the plan.
It came as the IOC formally opened its Rio bid process
Last November Brazil received four votes to win the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Under the proposal, the Olympics would be held at the Olympic Park in the central city of Maranhao and, if Brazil was a candidate, at the Olympic Stadium in Parana state, a strategic area that would be linked to the town of Recife.
If all three bids are successful, it would mark the first time the Games have been hosted on a large scale outside Rio since the 1960 Summer Games in Beijing, when hundreds of millions of people took part.
Brazilians have welcomed the news as the country seeks to host the Games while hoping the Games be included as an Olympic sport instead of a mere 'event' on the list of 'events'.
Mr Caballero said: "There are two things: it is a great thing to have Rio and I think we are in for a great event, we are going to have a great time, and also the new state's name in the state of Rio has a lot to do with that. This has something to do with the Olympic Games of the next century."
Brazilian Olympic committee chairman Ricardo Cunha added to AFP: "This is very important and important because of what the Olympics brings. We look forward to this, we will wait to see what the next steps will be," he told AFP.

Us europe police swoop on darknet markets
The new investigation came on the same day that the French government approved the creation of a new force to deal with bitcoin users.
In 2013, when the country banned the virtual currency it said was being used to launder money to terrorists, France had its first bitcoin-related raid in its history. At the time, police discovered nearly 400 "darknet markets" ââ?¬â?? small communities where users traded illegal drugs, weapons and even bitcoin ââ?¬â?? on its territory.
The new force, due to start next week, was set up so it could conduct searches by French police of such markets to collect evidence.
The new force will include members of France's digital crime squad known as DGSE ââ?¬â?? Digital Forensics and Enforcement ââ?¬â?? with members from the national cybercrime unit Cybercrimes.
The DGSE also hopes to increase its powers in the country's second most popular illicit market in Europe, the illicit market in black market markets Silk Road, by bringing in additional authorities.
The launch of the new agency was part of France's plans to make bitcoin a mainstream currency by 2014.
It is likely that the new operation will expand the powers of the DGSE, making them able to monitor virtual currencies in the same way as the country's police, so as to take action on suspected financial crime in virtual currency markets.

Artillery duel on korean border with ujis
Korea, July 20 ââ?¬â?? Pyongyang has fired three artillery shells toward the isolated city of Uijeongbu, where the two Koreas are locked in a battle over the disputed land border, experts said Thursday.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff told reporters on Wednesday that Kim Jong-un fired two artillery shells into Uijeongbu shortly after 8 p.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) and that "a third shell exploded about 30 minutes later."
The joint chiefs didn't identify the target of the fire, but South Korea's Ministry of Defence told the state-run Korean Central News Agency there were three shells fired.
North Korea is heavily engaged in a standoff with its neighbors, who have threatened a nuclear strike against Seoul and the U.S. and threatened a pre-emptive U.S. strike if war breaks out.
Thursday's South Korean defense spokesman Park Jin-min told reporters, however, the three shells had been fired by an area about 50 miles (80 km) east of Uijeongbu, where the two Koreas are locked in an artillery battle.
The shelling, which South Korea's Yonhap news agency said was "likely aimed at a nearby village" or "a part of the border," was apparently from one of North Korea's most advanced artillery systems and would have created "a serious threat to the border."
"The North Korean border is the most stable, and we are already talking about another massive war on the Korean Peninsula," Lee Myung-bak, a professor of U.S. military affairs at Seoul National University said.
U.S. President Barack Obama is attending an Asia-Pacific summit in Vietnam in late June and a scheduled visit to Seoul earlier this month. He said on Tuesday that the North "will make good on what they've said they want to do" should the United States and South Korea choose to intervene militarily against its nuclear-armed neighbor.
The North said earlier in July the South's strike against its nuclear test site was "another meaningless and illegal provocation" aimed at launching a pre-emptive nuclear strike against it.
The government of North Korea has been ratcheting up its rhetoric, with its state media claiming it was holding talks with China.

Energex resignation fails to deter beattie's plan to replace Mr Blair
The Telegraph. London. Thursday 29 June, 2010.
David Cameron could yet have had a huge lift on his party if he had acted early enough to remove Andy Beattie, the former chancellor.
The defeat of Ed Miliband is only one example of a political class so distracted by its own defeat that it is willing to leave the big challenges for the next leader and an unrivalled succession task to those who had more power over Mr Miliband.
Mr Beattie, now a top Conservative donor, became a Tory heavyweight thanks to the coalition which brought together George Osborne and the Tories, with the support of Lib-Dems and Labour.
He was brought on after a "devastating" defeat in the 2005 election. He had already been a friend of Mr Miliband since their days at Cambridge, having met when the then shadow chancellor, John Major, was still an MP.
Now that Mr Miliband has won, Mr Beattie - who has been backed by the Lib Dems, but is on the Tory side - is no longer a leading Tory donor but a staunch supporter. In some of the most high-profile campaign spots, he is also on the payroll of a large campaign group called Conservative Citizens which has its headquarters in central London.
A senior Conservative party figure insisted: "I know Mr Beattie well. I knew him before David was the leader; I've known him since. He has a heart, but not an iron will."
But a spokesman for Mr Miliband did not believe the former chancellor's resignation was a direct consequence of Mr Beattie's "dilettante behaviour".
"My view is that it was Ed's failure in prime ministership, while at the same time his failure as leader of the Labour party, which contributed most to that. He would not have been president of the party for such a time, and as a new party leader he had many responsibilities.
"I was just delighted when Ed announced his departure. This was a big surprise, but I would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to him as well as to all the MPs who have supported him over his seven years in office."
While Mr Miliband had previously been criticised by members of his party and the public for his "dilettante" style of leadership, the Lib Dem MP Tom Watson warned that he may have been forced out by anger from Mr Beattie's fans on Twitter.
A senior Conservative source insisted: "As far as Ed is concerned, the Lib Dems were right, his fans were right, and his party was right, and that's the right way forward."
